Berlin.Industrial.Group. Acquires Laser-based Weed Control Startup

With the acquisition of Escarda Technologies, Berlin.Industrial.Group. continues its strategy of bringing technology-driven startups to industrial scale. The laser system for herbicide-free weed control will now be manufactured in series within the group.

Berlin.Industrial.Group. (B.I.G.) has fully acquired the Berlin-based agritech company Escarda Technologies. The technology group is thereby strengthening its position as an industrial partner for technology-driven startups. Having supported Escarda as an investor since its founding, B.I.G. is now transferring the CE-compliant laser weeding system into series production and making it available across Europe. In return, Escarda gains access to industrial capacities in photonics, embedded software, mechanical engineering and manufacturing.

Founded in 2019, Escarda develops a system that eliminates weeds without the use of herbicides. Using camera technology and AI, the system identifies unwanted plants and removes them selectively with laser technology – precisely, automated and without chemical agents. Demand is high: in many crops, dispensing with herbicides has so far only been possible through labor-intensive manual work. At the same time, regulatory requirements across Europe are tightening restrictions on the use of pesticides.

“We don’t just want to finance deep tech, we want to turn it into market-ready industrial products,” says Jan-Marc Lischka, Managing Director of B.I.G. Holding. “With Escarda, we are once again demonstrating how sophisticated technology can be transformed into a product ready for series production.”

Production and value creation in Berlin

Development, production ramp-up and Escarda’s core functions will remain consolidated in Berlin. In doing so, B.I.G. is not only strengthening its portfolio, but also industrial value creation in the region.

At the group’s Berlin Tech Campus, startups and global market leaders work on high-tech solutions in fields such as medical and energy technology, tool and mechanical engineering, and environmental technology. In addition to group companies, external hardtech startups also make use of the infrastructure and exchange on site.

“Berlin has a strong startup scene. What is often missing is the industrial environment for hardware and deep tech founders,” says Marco Climaco, Managing Director of Escarda Technologies. “With B.I.G. and at the Tech Campus in Berlin-Marzahn, we can now scale with a long-term perspective.”

With the full acquisition, Berlin.Industrial.Group. underscores its ambition to support technology-driven companies from development through to industrial manufacturing, thereby strengthening sustainable innovation “Made in Berlin.”
